Drawing Algorithms

An algorithm, drawn by a 49-year-old female business professor and sociologist in the US.

Great, thank you. I may have one other drawing to ask from you, which is to draw how an algorithm works. I'll leave the recorder on, so you can narrate that one. [longer pause] Can you say what that is, just even whatever..? It's an equation and it's taking all of this disparate data on different variables, different factors, how things come together and using it to produce some outcomes, some dependent variable in my world. I assume that algorithms are kind of summarizing different sources of data to see the patterns and producing some predictions about how things will play out in the real world. There's going to be uncertainty and error in that process. Okay. Where have you heard about algorithms? Where have I heard about algorithms? I don't know, news and conversations about how Facebook decides what to show us or Amazon decides what to advertise to us or Netflix decides what we might like based on our past viewing patterns. Okay. Yes. Okay.
