Drawing Algorithms

An algorithm, drawn by a 21-year-old female student of journalism in the US.

I'd like you to do is draw how an algorithm works. And I'll keep this on so you can narrate what you're doing. Draw how an algorithm works. Mhm. Like an online algorithm? Or like a math? Up to you. Okay. So. I guess like. I guess when you kind of like to start off. Like the first thing is like a formula. So like, in math we used to do like y equals like mx plus b - I am journalism major, so like I don't even. I think that's for slope, I don't really know if I'm being really honest [laughs]. Your study is going to think I'm stupid [laughs]. So, it's kind of a formula. So it's kind of like, if we're talking about an algorithm of like which posts come up on Instagram like - they use like information that's like already like about you and then like they kind of like. You put in something else each time like a different time like based on like all those things. So, I guess it's like you have the formula and then. Your question was how does an algorithm work? Okay. So. So then. Based on like what you give this like website it kind of like gives you sort of like. It gives you like a feed or it gives you, I guess if we are talking about a formula it gives you like an answer to like the problem. I don't really know how I would draw this but. No, that's fine. This is what I have [laughs]. Where have you heard of algorithms? Facebook and like Instagram and Twitter have them about like which posts do you see the second that you open up that app. But how do you know that? I know that because. I think I know that because - that's a good question. My friends talk about it. There's sometimes like news articles that say like "Instagram is like changing its like algorithm". I know the way it works for like Instagram and it used to work for Facebook is everything used to just be in the order. Like in time order. So like whenever it had happened it would just like stack up like that. But then things kind of started changing and I started seeing more like posts of like people that like I have liked or. I like more people's posts on their accounts so like that's what comes up first now. So, I think when that kind of changed. When they changed their algorithm that's how I was conscious of what it was that they were even doing something intentional in the first place.
