Drawing Algorithms
← Go back

An algorithm, drawn by a 58-year-old female retiree in Turkey.

Can you please draw how an algorithm works? What algorithm… just a second, may I think about it for a second? I have actually heard about it. Was it a computer program? , Well, I can’t explain it. I don't know if it’s correct. Let’s say, hmm, I'm going to do something on mobile phone or tablet. I think the computer decides on how I can do it. I think it’s something like a computer program. Let's say I want to buy a travel package on, for example, booking.com. It gives me a list of hotels that are suitable for me, a list of hotels where I can go and spend my vacation. I choose one from this list. I decide which one suits me, in terms of price or options that are offered. Let's say I made a purchase. After a while, I go to social media, I go to Instagram, I go to Facebook. So when I enter to do something else, I see the advertisements of booking.com or hotels. When such things come out, I think, "Hmm, yes, I was interested in it for a while. I was searching for something like this online. Can you also draw this? I know, you explained it in a very good way but we need a drawing. Sure, I’m drawing now. Now, this is my phone. There is one, hmm, how can I say, a pool. There are many waves in this pool. There are lots of waves. Let the website I enter with the search bar be booking.com. I see the hotels there. I choose one of these, I decide, but then… [conversation interrupted, coffee service, then continues drawing]. Then, in this pool, advertisements about the place I am looking appear on social media all the time. So I think this is how the algorithm works. I can tell you [hesitates] like that. You drew some arrows in here, can you explain them as well, what is this? Hmm, as I said, I just entered an address, bought a holiday package, I saw the names of many hotels there. Then, when I’m on social media – it can be Facebook or Instagram- when I go there, I see that the advertisements of the hotels I searched for appears again. How do you think this happens? I do not know. I do not know. But those two are... Yes, I think those are somehow related… yes, I don't know how… I don't know how. I understand. Well, you have said that your have heard the word algorithm before. Yes, I have heard that term. Do you remember when? I don’t remember. Or in what context? I don’t know. Do you hear about them now?? Yes, yes I hear about them. But I don't know how it exactly works. I can only make a correlation that way [she means the example she mentioned]. I understand, thank you.
